Today Tish and I went to church with Dr. McConnell and his family. We did not get to see their home-church in Abbeville, because on this particular day he was preaching at a nearby church, somewhere north of Oxford. Truth be told, I don’t know where we went, but it was fabulous. They had “children’s day,” where the youth in the church led the worship and participated in other parts of the service. Fabulous is the ideal word. The “kids” in the choir (from little guys up to students only a few years younger than me) had a lot of soul. And Dr. McConnell is quite an engaging preacher, but I confess that his talent didn’t surprise me a bit.
For those of you who don’t know, Dr. Germain McConnell is an Assistant Dean at the School of Education here at Ole Miss and the Co-Director of the Mississippi Teacher Corps, and has also been the Program Manager (now Ben’s job) and is a turn-of-the-millennium alumnus of the program. He works as an educator and with educators. His heart is for young people, and to build up leaders among young people, and that certainly came through in his preaching as much as it does in his work with Teacher Corps.
I give biographical information only because his name will probably come up again in later posts.
And, praise the Lord, my head-cold is all gone today.
